Fieldfares and Redwings

I cannot believe how long it is since I wrote a post on this blog but the only thing of note has been the snow this January and the number of bird species it has brought in.

 

All the usual birds were around and in addition there have been three new species for The Willows - Pied Wagtail; Fieldfare and Redwing.  The Fieldfares stayed on after the snow had melted.

It continued to snow overnight but the sun shone all day so much of it melted away.

Most of the country has been paralysed by snow. We had a mere half inch of the stuff but at least it gave me an excuse to take photos. (Just as if I had ever needed an excuse to get the camera out.)





First it was trip around the garden.




Then along the road to Marlfield Lane.




And on the way back from the shops I came through Pensby’s one piece of woodland on Fishers Lane where I discovered even half an inch of snow and leaf mould can hide a six inch deep muddy puddle. Feet and boots are now drying out...

Snow overnight but by the time I got outside the sun was shining and what was left was drip dripping off the shrubs and trees.


The snow had rather battered the daffodils but the newly blooming tulips had coped well and will shortly be at their best.


A long-overdue task has been the need to take off a large limb from the Willow. It has been overhanging the doctor’s car park and for the last couple of years I have had to prune the branches every couple of weeks. I could only do the job when the car park is empty and there doesn’t seem to have been a suitable Sunday until today. It was hard work but it’s a job well done.


And there’s plenty of wood for the fire!
